PRESS STATEMENT ON THE U.S.-IRAN NEGOTIATIONS TO RESTORE THE IRAN NUCLEAR DEAL

Person2Person, a private, charitable, U.S.-based initiative promoting international friendship, strongly encourages the U.S. government to return immediately to its obligations under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (Iran nuclear deal). The abrupt, one-sided abrogation of our responsibilities under that treaty by President Donald Trump in May 2018 has had many negative consequences: It undermined the faith of the international community in the longevity of international agreements with the United States. It allowed Iran to enrich uranium beyond the agreement’s limitations. It undermined efforts for democratic reform in Iran and harmed the political prospects of the reformists who supported the JCPOA in Iran. It damaged U.S. trade interests and those of our allies. It negatively impacted the oil market, causing Americans and others to pay more for oil and gasoline. And most importantly, it shrunk the Iranian middle class and caused economic damage, as well as an uncounted number of deaths, to innocent Iranian citizens. As a result of the reimposed sanctions, they have lacked the ability to purchase medical equipment, medicine, and vaccines abroad due to their government’s inability to use international finance mechanisms.

We call on President Joseph Biden and all stakeholders to reimplement the deal immediately and without preconditions, as well to lift other sanctions on Iran not imposed by the U.N. Security Council. Doing so will restore U.S. credibility and serve the interests of international peace. It will also lay the groundwork for a future restoration of the former friendship that long existed between Iran and the United States prior to the 1953 U.S.-British coup that overthrew Iran’s democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh.
